Close to the Monastero Maggiore you can find
the Ipogeo Celtico. It consists of differents
underground rooms, digged in the cliff with
ancient technique, developed in various levels
and ramifications, such as to form a K-shaped
building. A steep ladder leads to the central
room, from where three corridors depart. On
the walls there are niches and raw benches,
but the greater mystery is represented by three
large masks. The original function of this particular
monument, unique in the region Friuli, is still
an unresolved question.
There are different ideas about the function
of the monument: someone belives it had a funeral
use when the Celts used to be in Cividale, others
assume that the Ipogeo Celtico was a jail during
Roman times.
