The village of Antro gives its name to the surrounding territory and it is situated to 318 m. on the sea level. In a rocky face there is the hypogeum called "Saint John of Antro's cave".

Geology

Cave entrance

The entrance of the cave is situated to 350 m. on the sea level and the geologic route, currently explored for 4500 m., is developed in horizontal sense on many levels.
Explorations in the cave started in 1885 and in 1925 explorers exceeded a tight passage that allows to reach the actual development now.
Tourist route is caracterised by a semiartificial path that allows hikers to penetrated in the deep of the earth.

Archaeology

At Saint John there are two buildings but a meager number of human objects. This deficiency is caused by three factors:
- no aimed archaeological diggings
- dispersed and not documented material

In the cave

- water basements that change the ground of the cave and that allows to find bony fragments that belong to the Ursus speaeus (bear of the caves)

Archaeological objects can be divided in four categories:
1. ceramics ( pre-Roman period)
2. metal ( Medieval period)
3. glass
4. bone and teeth of animals

The bear

The bear of caves appeared at the end of the Glacial Era of the Riss ( 120.000 years ago) and it's diffused during the Wurm I, but it disappeared at the end of this Glacial Era.
The period of its maximum expansion is between 80.000 and 35.000 years ago.
Most ancient things of our cave are approximately dated 40.000 years.
The area of distribution of Ursus speaeus's fossil rests is in moderated-continental zones of Europe.

The bear

These bears were diffent from our bears for one reason: the hibernation had always place in natural caves and seldom in shelter.
Ursus speaeus was vegetarian and after the winter hibernation it went around for finding food during all hot season.
Bears of caves's dimension are similar to grey bears of North America, but their skull is different: the front is convex which derives from an increasing of nose dimention.
They used much more molars during mastication and this fact dimostrates these bears were mostly vegetarians.

Questo adattamento sembrerebbe confermare il maggior uso dei molari durante la masticazione, e ciò fornirebbe, indirettamente, un'ulteriore prova a favore della teoria che ritiene che questi
fossero animali prevalentemente vegetariani.
Predators in a position to competing with them did not exist.
The Ursus spelaeus disappeared in short time.
